Finding Your Personal Style Again

When Did Getting Dressed Become So Complicated?

Our bodies change. Our lifestyles change. Trends change. Perhaps we've spent years dressing for work, children, practicality or other people's expectations. When you feel like you’ve suddenly lost your sense of style, when your wardrobe is full but nothing feels quite right anymore the question becomes ‘What do I actually like now?’

Your Style May Not Have Disappeared. You May Have Changed

You haven't necessarily “lost” your style. The woman you are now may simply have different tastes, priorities and needs from the woman you were ten or twenty years ago. Perhaps you no longer want to wear what everyone else is wearing. Perhaps comfort matters  more. Perhaps quality matters more. Perhaps you're drawn to softer colours, beautiful fabrics, classic silhouettes or something completely different.

Your wardrobe needs to catch up with the woman you've become.

Stop Dressing for Who You Think You Should Be

Fashion constantly tells us what is “in”, what is flattering, what women our age should wear and what we supposedly need next.

But personal style isn't about following a formula.

Ask:

  • What do I genuinely love wearing?

  • What colours make me feel good?

  • What fabrics do I enjoy?

  • What clothes make me feel confident?

  • What do I reach for again and again?

  • What would I wear if nobody else were going to see me?

The goal isn't to create a perfect wardrobe.

It's to create a wardrobe that feels like you.

Look Back Before You Look Forward

Before buying anything new, look at your old photographs. What did you wear when you felt most yourself? Was there a particular silhouette, colour, hairstyle, fabric or combination you loved? Perhaps your old style contains clues about what you've always been drawn to. You don't need to recreate your younger self. Instead, look for the threads that have always been yours.

Build a Wardrobe Around Your Real Life

Your wardrobe should reflect the life you actually live. What do you spend your days doing? Where do you go? How do you want to feel when you're getting dressed? Perhaps you need beautiful everyday clothes rather than more occasion pieces. Perhaps you need clothes that work for lunches, travel, weekends, walks, work and evenings. The most stylish wardrobe isn't necessarily the biggest one. It's the one that works beautifully for your life.

Choose Quality Over Trends

Rather than constantly buying the latest trend, consider:

  • beautiful fabrics

  • good craftsmanship

  • timeless shapes

  • pieces you'll wear repeatedly

  • clothes that can become part of your story

Personal style develops when we stop replacing our identity every season.

Wearing something for years isn't boring. It's actually part of developing your own style.

Let Yourself Experiment

Finding personal style should also be fun. Try the colour you've always avoided. Wear the statement earrings. Mix something vintage with something modern. Try a different silhouette. Get out the sewing machine. Visit a vintage shop. Borrow something. Play with accessories.

You are allowed to change your mind!

Personal style isn't a set of rules. It's something that evolves as you do.

Style Is About More Than Clothes

Personal style can be found in:

your home,
your books,
your garden,
your food,
your hobbies,
the places you visit,
the way you spend your time.

It is really an extension of how you choose to live.

Come Back to Yourself

Finding your style isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering what you love. The clothes you feel wonderful in. The colours that make you smile. The textures you enjoy. The things that make you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.

Your personal style doesn't need to impress anyone. It simply needs to feel like you.
