What If We Treated Tuesday Like It Mattered?
We tend to save all of the good things in life for the weekend. We spend the working week trying to ‘get through’. Tired, stressed and counting down until Friday. We save the flowers, the nice plates, the bottle of wine and the candles for when we can finally relax. But why?
One of the nicest forms of luxury, and of living intentionally, is learning to enjoy the ordinary days rather than constantly waiting for the weekend.
We don’t need a special occasion to make our days feel special. Sometimes the occasion is simply being together and sharing a delicious meal. Think Mediterranean vibes: a long meal gathered around the table, chatting about your day, enjoying good food and taking your time.
Start With the Season
Rather than thinking “What should I cook tonight?”, think “What does autumn make me want to eat?”
Think of simple, seasonal ingredients. Autumn naturally lends itself to warming, comforting foods: carrots, leeks, potatoes, apples, pears, squash and herbs. Think soups, stews, roasted vegetables, bubbling dishes from the oven and warm puddings.
A simple warming soup is perfect for Autumn.
Cook Something That Takes a Little Time
We often see cooking dinner as yet another task on our long list of daily chores. Why not reframe it as the point in the day when you start to wind down? A daily ritual to signal that it's time to switch off.
Choose something that takes 45 to 60 minutes but doesn’t require constant attention. Put some fun music on while you chop. Sing along. Move your body. Choose something you can put in the oven and then start to slow down for the evening while it cooks.
You could even make a small charcuterie board as a starter for everyone to snack on while dinner is cooking.
This Autumn Chicken, Leek & White Wine Bake is the perfect example of a simple roasting dish that’s bursting with flavour.
Chicken, leeks, garlic, carrots, perhaps some little potatoes, thyme and a creamy white wine sauce. Everything goes into one roasting dish.
It feels like proper autumn comfort food, but you're not standing at the cooker for an hour.
Serve it with crusty bread and a simple green salad.
Set the Table. Even If It's Just Tuesday.
You don't need a fancy table. Use what you already own. A linen tablecloth or runner. Your favourite plates. Cloth napkins. A few candles. A jug of water or fruit juice.
There is something wonderfully optimistic about setting a beautiful table for an ordinary Tuesday.
Put the Phone Away
Make dinner the point of the evening. Put your phones somewhere else. Turn off the television. Put on some music.
If you're eating with family, ask everyone about their day. If you're eating alone, make the same effort. Pour yourself something lovely. Sit at the table. Use a proper plate. Treat yourself as you would an honoured guest.
The Little Extras Make It Feel Special
You don't need ten courses. Just add one or two little details: a small bowl of olives, warm bread with salted butter, a homemade dressing or coleslaw, music and candles.
These are the little details that turn dinner into an occasion rather than a rushed, last-minute effort.

Don't Forget Dessert
Finish with a simple, comforting dessert.
These Stewed Apples with Cinnamon & Oats are wonderfully simple, easy to make and go perfectly after the chicken dish.
Apples are baked until soft with cinnamon and honey, then served warm with mascarpone or vanilla yoghurt.
Make Tomorrow's Dinner Tonight
Give your future self a little gift.
If you're already cooking, make enough for tomorrow. Perhaps the leftover chicken and vegetables can be served with rice the next day. Your effort from tonight gives you a little more time to relax on Wednesday.
The Evening Doesn't Need to Be Perfect
The table might not look perfect. Someone might spill something. The dog might wander around. You might be tired.
That's okay.
The point isn't to recreate a restaurant. It's to create a little moment of care and connection in the middle of an ordinary week.
